The Truth of Christmas

As many of you know, we have been going through a sermon series based on Isaiah 9:6 and the names given to Jesus by his Father. We know and believe that the events leading up to the birth of Christ were not coincidental, but were put in place by God. In fact, God was so anxious to let the world know about His son, that he announced Jesus’ arrival 700 years before it actually happened. And everything that happened, from the time the census was ordered, to everyone going home to their own city to register, to the birth of Jesus while Joseph & Mary were in Bethlehem, was orchestrated by God. Out of Bethlehem, a small town, meaning “House of Bread”, came the Messiah, the Bread of Life. His birth was the beginning of something incredible. To think that Jesus Christ, the only Begotten Son of God, would leave His throne in glory, take on human flesh just to bring salvation for those would accept Him and reconcile us to God, blows my mind! He came into this world as a helpless baby, grew into a toddler, then a teenager before growing into an adult and experienced humanity at all levels so that He could truly identify with each of us in all stages of life. That very first Christmas, God gave the greatest gift that we would ever receive… His Son! And His Son turned around and gave the gift of His life – which was why He came. Because of this, we can have relationship with God. Because of Jesus Christ, we are Sons and Daughters of the Most High God! AMEN!! So this Christmas, let’s remember the ‘True’ Christmas story, which led to the ‘True’ Easter story. No matter how “worldly” the world around us is becoming, trying to make this season the “unnamed” holiday, let us boldly proclaim the truth about the birth of Jesus. The true reason for the season, and keep CHRIST in in CHRISTmas !

Keep CHRIST in Christmas

As I’m sitting here staring at the computer screen, I’m reading the words on the screen that I have seen several times around me: “Keep CHRIST in Christmas.”  And I thought about these words, it comes to mind that so often these days we see Christmas with the ‘Christ’ taken out and replaced with an ‘X’. “Merry X-Mas!” the window says, and anger and sadness some to my heart.  It seems like it has become a nameless celebration today. We as Christians know how far from the truth that is. We read in the Bible that there were angels who appeared to the shepherds and declared the birth of Jesus, who is the Christ (the Messiah). There is no way this can be nor should be a ‘nameless’ event, but it should be a wonderful celebration of the greatest event this world has ever seen- the birth of Jesus Christ our Savior, and the reconciliation to God He brought to all of us. So let’s keep the “Christ” in Christmas. Christmas must always start with Christ, because He has saved us and has changed our lives.

The Danger of Being Complacent

Old Mr. Webster defines complacency as “A feeling of being satisfied with how things are, and not wanting to try to make them better.” and when we associate that with our walk with Christ, it’s a little bit frightening. And may also add that it is exactly where Satan wants us to be. When we convince ourselves that we have reached a point of comfortable satisfaction in our faith, and when we feel we no longer need to move any further toward pleasing God and getting out of our comfort zone, we have lost the battle. And we have been deceived by the Enemy. When we get to the point that our spiritual life takes a backseat to OUR life, we have been defeated. Why? Because complacency is the most dangerous place we can be as believers. This is where we become lazy; this is where we become lukewarm; this is where we are deceived and can be easily overtaken by the enemy (the devil). Paul wrote in Philippians 1:21-22 “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell.”  This verse comes across as powerful, encouraging, and even convicting to the Christian. We all have good intentions when we start talking about growing stronger in our relationship with Christ. “I need to read my bible more”, “I can’t wait to get into the new Bible study at the church,” even “I need to pray more and have a spirit of expectancy,” but somewhere along the way we lose focus and our drive and all we have to show are our good intentions. At what point do we just take a step back and examine our hearts, our situation, and our motivation? Life happens, I understand that completely; our kids have SO much they’re involved in now, working around the house that needs to be done, prior commitments, this or that, the list goes on and on. One day comes and goes, and so does the next, and all this time we’re on spiritual cruise control, simply cruising through our daily routines while the hours fly by. Then there are those who are in hot pursuit, hurrying to get to the next thing and wanting to conquer the next obstacle that is ahead of us. Consumed with the taste of success, and the life we have achieved (or want to achieve) for ourselves and our family; all the while forgetting who has provided the very opportunities for us. Have we forgotten Psalm 46:10 tells us to “Be still and know that I am God!” ? There’s not an exclamation point on the end of that sentence for no reason. I believe God was trying o get our attention and realize that He IS in control!! So many times we also tend to point our fingers toward other things and blame other people for making us so busy, but, Galatians 6:5 tells us clearly “For each one shall bear his own load.” We have become complacent. Many have, it’s not just a select few. Sometimes we have become so complacent in the fact that we are complacent! We listen to the devil as he tries to remind us that we are just so busy and we have to get this done or that done, that we simply do not have time for the “church thing”. “We’re doing just fine the way we are.” What is it about our walk with Christ that we feel we can put it on the back-burner? What is it about our salvation that we feel like tomorrow is the perfect day (and then all our tomorrow turn into another tomorrow)? We have lost motivation, as well as our sight of what should be the driving force of our lives. For me, being lukewarm and being spit out of God’s mouth is not something that I’m exactly striving for (Rev. 3). Lou Holtz once said, “Ability is what we are capable of doing, motivation determines what we do, and attitude determines how well we do it.” God gives us the ability, with his power and guidance, to do anything – Philippians 4:13. It seems many times as though many of us choose to be complacent and allow our faith to be stagnant, and let our own agendas become the priority over strengthening our faith in Christ. Take a moment to step back. Then take a look at your priorities and desires. All of these factor in on our complacency in our Christian walk, or in our thriving Christian life. It’s up to you and I, to fight our complacency, find our motivation, adjust our attitude, and give Christ first place in our lives. Be compelled to worship, be driven to serve, and eager to work toward the life that God has called us to live. And do it all, for HIS glory!!!

Lukewarm Christianity

Recently I read an article that was talking about a group of Atheists who said they were raised in church butwere asked whythey had since left the church, strayed or fallen in to their state of unbelief. Accroding to them, the answer was overwhelming. It was their observation of the “church people” who did not act like Christians outside the walls, who did not live like Christ. Theyw ere talking of the very people who they had watched grosing up, who could have and should have brought them into a relationship with Jesus, but who had pushed them away.

God has a biblical term for these type of  “Christians”…..Lukewarm.

In Revelation 3:16 reads, “So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of my mouth.” We can take this verse as a word of  warning against something that has plagued the church for far too long…Apathy.

So the question for us is this, “What are you doing? If what you are doing does not get you excited for the Cause of Christ and make you want to get out of the pew and into the fight then you need to change directions. Begin praying that God would  do a powerful work in your herat and remove whatver it may be that is keeping you enslaved and serving Him faithfully. Christianty is not a safe, easy or simple life. If you think it is, you are fooling yourself! We are called to sacrifice of our sleves not live the life of comfort and simply go through the motions.

We do not merely show up at church on Sundays so we can say ” Well, went to church,  I’m good until next Sunday!” and nothing more. There are so many around us who need to see Jesus through us. You may not realize this, but we are either pointing people to Jesus or pushing them away.

Each of us have a gift that can be used for God’s Kingdom. Everyone of us has a calling on our lives. Part of picking up our crosses and following Christ is finding out what are gift is and using it to advance the Kingdom of God.

We can no longer simply sit and watch the world go by. Our families, our church, our communities need us to step up and start being the church God has called us to be!  Begin today to find ways to serve Him, seek Him and lead others to  Him.

Labor Day Thoughts

Here I sit this this Sunday evening at the church and it’s the day before Labor Day. Many of you are trying to enjoy the last days before the Fall season “unofficially” begins. I just read a story that I’d like ot share with you.

The story is told of a woman who cleaned the same office building for many years. When asked how she endured the doing the same chores day in and day out, she replied, “It’s not that boring to me. I’m working for the King and He’s pleased, (along with others) when I do my best.” This woman had found the secret to meaningful work.

How about you? Are you willing to start back to work with a fresh mind and a renewed spirit after tomorrow’s holiday? Even if you’re not doing exactly what you “want” to do, let usbe thankful for the blessing of having a  job. But even more, we should make sure that when we work, “we do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

And when we do that, we will be blessed in more ways than we had ever imagined!!
Beblessed this Labor Day and EVERY day!!

Refreshment

Burnout for Christians is very real and can have a long lasting effect on our walk with God. It can leave one feeling empty, discouraged even exhausted . Many find that they simply do not have any energy for the things of God. Does that sound familiar? Are you feeling the effects of burnout? Maybe it’s time to take a moment to “refill the tank”, a get re-energized for the things of God.
Start off by first by simply getting away. You don’t necessarily have to use a vacation to do this or even drive hundreds miles away. You can simply pick a place close to home to relax and simply enjoy being in His presence. Getting away doesn’t always mean a change in your physical location, as long as your getting away from the daily grind and stresses to spend time with God. Secondly, Be Still. Psalm 46:10 tells us “Be still, and know that I am God..” Taking the time to do that is often times easier said than done. There are so many things that call for our attention. And if we don’t learn to take some time and listen for God’s voice above the noise the world makes, then we could potentially miss the message God is trying to place in our hearts. Being still means take a break from the hustle and bustle of work, school and other outside distraction so we can focus on God. Meditate on His word. Study it. Read what it has to say to your soul as you read it. Take some time to listen for the voice of God. God so many times, speaks to us in a still small voice, or He may even give a word through someone else. And finally, just be present. Be there. Don’t simply go through the motions of church, experience worship. Worship is meant to be experienced. Many times we can be so busy doing things that we miss those special moments God has for us. We can’t afford to miss God’s voice, or experience His presence. Take time this week to replenish your soul. Take time to talk with Him and then, just sit and listen for the voice of God. He may just surprise you with an answer you’ve been waiting for, needing to receive and “refill your tank”.

No Worries Here

Psalm 34:4 ” I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.”
It seems we are often trapped by worry or knocked off course by the things we have no control over. Many times, the things we face in our world aggravate this sense of worry. But what does Jesus say about worry? In Matthew 6:33-34 Jesus tells not only His disciples but to each of us, ” Take no therefore no thought for the morrow…but seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and his righteousness ; all these things shall added unto you.” So many of you are filled with anxieties that you have no control over, but we know the One who does control it all. Bring them to the Savior today. He and He alone can take them from you and bring peace to your heart, soul and mind.

What God Asks

God says in Exodus 20:3 “Thou shalt have no other God before me” yet everyday many seek to replace God with things that of no eternal importance . Things such as pride, money, work, their own pursuits and sometimes even other poeple. If we’re not careful we can go after those things with such a passion that we sacrifice the things that we should be building a firm foundation on.
The foundations of faith should be built on the one true God. Everything arround us, ALL of creation points to His existence and His Glory!
Take a moment to examine yourself and see if there may be anything that takes a higher position in your life including your thoughts and other pursuits than the things of God. Take those things, and place them under the blood of Jesus and set your mind on the things that are above. And allow God to use your efforts to make an impact for His Kingdom!!

Find Christ in Every Situation

How many of us find ourselves asking where is Jesus in all of this mess? Why doesn’t He help me like the preacher said He would? Many times we find that we are frustrated when things don’t seem to be going our way. But, regardless of our plans for a better situation, did you notice that Jesus still showed up? In the midst of your chaos, at the time of your greatest despair, when you needed Him most, you found Jesus.

And He’s been there all along…….

You see, things don’t always work out the way we feel they should. There are at times many unexpected detours, and twists and turns even setbacks in our lives. But there is Jesus, and He still shows up.  The sooner we learn to embrace all those twists and turns and learn to see them as opportunities for us to see God at work, the more we will find ourselves looking for Jesus in the midst of our storm and in every situation we may be facing.

No More Excuses

This week as many as you know, we were in Revival with Master’s Voice. What an Incredible week we had!! Each sermon preached by Bro. Ricky Capps was so powerful and anointed. One particular sermon we were challenged to get back in the fight. And since that sermon, I have had a fire lit under me!! Let me share what God has placed in my heart from that message.
Would you fight for your family? Would you fight for your friends, your church? Would you be willing to take up the fight for your community? We can’t wait for someone else to show up and fight for us…it is up to you and me!
But how do we fight? Aren’t we supposed to be peaceful and easy going people? Yes. But we fight by different standards.
We fight by calling out to God in  prayer. We fight with accountability and living the kind of lives that is pleasing to God through integrity.
We fight by the way we choose to react to the things going on in our lives whether it be positive or negative. We can fight by the way we serve and reach out to those around us who seem to have been forgotten.
We fight by standing our ground and not compromising the Word of God! We fight by not backing down what we know is right in the sight of the GOd we serve!
Be genuine, smart and be humble. But be confident. Be a man and woman of action.  Do not wait until you feel you are qualified or have your ducks in a row as they say. None of us are perfect on our own. But with Christ, we are more than conquerors.
Get in the fight….No More Excuses.
